The Workhouse, 2021

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, 12 older dancers used video conferencing to work with choreographer Tom Dale. Originally brought together to work on a live performance, the project’s artistic team and participants had to adapt to the changing reality brought about by COVID-19.

The choreography, performance and soundtrack for the film are inspired by The Workhouse, Southwell, a National Trust property. Built in 1824, it is the most complete Victorian workhouse still in existence. Its architecture was influenced by prison design and its harsh regime became a blueprint for workhouses throughout the country. This film artistically shares this story, within the constraints of the pandemic which the dancers felt confined to their home and shielding. Their own experiences and the history of the workhouse, blend together to create an emotional and moving film.

The film was entirely performed, recorded and edited remotely, with the majority of the choreography created during the editing process.
