Cycle Dialogues, 2002 - 2009

These are a series of shorts documenting Sima’s journey through seven countries over seven years, cycling over 7000 miles across Europe and South-East Asia.

Through these journeys, the bicycle became a vehicle of exploration for womanhood, independence, identity and cultural connections. The world is experienced through the senses, through movement and non-verbal communication - the bike is a quiet, accessible tool to enable conversations, exchanges and connection with people.

The film focuses on crossing barriers and borders- these include the physical borders crossed, but also the cultural borders discovered and traversed as a lone Asian female cyclist.

This work was funded by Arts Council England. It culminated in a series of artist residencies and digital installation at Walsall New Art Gallery, Fierce Festival and a writers residency at Harp Newspaper. Screened at Midlands Arts Centre.
